ABOUT OUR CHAIRMAN:
A native of Hampton County, South Carolina, artist, art educator, curator and photographer John Glenn Wright once sat in the "colored" section of the Palmetto Theater as a child. Today, he directs the programming at the Theater as Chairman of the Board for Hampton Friends of the Arts and lends his vision to the goals and directives of the organization as it strives to serve the under-resourced, predominantly African-American communities of the rural Lowcountry.
Chairman Wright earned his AA in Studio Art from USC Salkehatchie in 1982, followed by a BA in Fine Art from USC Columbia in 1984. He then returned for his MAT in Art Education which was conferred in 1987. He has enjoyed a distinguished career both as a contemporary visual artist and as a professor. His faculty appointments include serving as guest faculty for South Carolina State University, Columbia College, Webster University, and The University of South Carolina. He has also served as a juror for the South Carolina Governor’s school for the Arts & Humanities, as a board member for the National Council for the Accreditation of Teacher Education Programs, Curator for Education at the McKissick Museum, and as Assistant Professor of Art at Benedict College in Columbia, South Carolina.
Wright recently retired from the world of university academia to return to his roots in rural Hampton County where he teaches art to elementary and middle school students. In addition to his role as Chairman, Mr. Wright is Vice-Chairman of the Hampton County Arts Commission and serves as the curator for both of Hampton's public galleries: The Stanley Arts Center and The Palmetto Gallery.
